LOS ANGELES — Alex Fontenot wasn’t going to celebrate a personal achievement on Friday night, especially after the Colorado football team was routed by USC, 55-17.
Less than two weeks ago, the Colorado Buffaloes were so depleted at running back that they finished a game at Oregon State with only one scholarship player available.
Even without the services of Alex Fontenot, the Colorado running backs room has become crowded. It’s also a space that is growing into a place of equal opportunity.
When Colorado tried to run the ball last Friday, it found some success. Unfortunately for the Buffaloes, the outcome of the game, a 38-13 loss to TCU, forced them to get away from that aspect of their offense.
Almost all of the players who led the Colorado football team in the main statistical categories in 2019 are gone. Several graduated after that season. Others have moved on more recently.
With the start of preseason football practice quickly closing in, there may not be much hype surrounding the 2022 Colorado Buffaloes. At least senior running back Alex Fontenot will begin those preseason workouts with a small measure of national respect.
