Patriots mentioned as trade spot for former Tom Brady teammate

During last month's NFL Draft, the New England Patriots decided to pass on any lucrative trade offers, and with the No. 3 overall pick, they selected former North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

With Maye locked in to potentially be the Patriots' next franchise quarterback, the team now has to find players for him to actually throw to.

Currently, New England's wide receiver room consists of a group of guys who have either never caught a pass in the NFL or didn't finish with more than 50 catches during the 2023 season.

If the Patriots are interested in giving their rookie quarterback a more dependable option to throw to out on the field, then they might want to consider the suggestion that was recently made by Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston.

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected former University of Washington receiver Jalen McMillan during the draft, Perry believes they could now potentially be interested in trading veteran pass-catcher Chris Godwin before the start of the 2024 season.

If the Bucs are open to moving Godwin, Perry shared that he's a wide receiver New England should attempt to acquire "because even if he's not a true No. 1, he'd be your No. 1 if you're the New England Patriots."

In 17 games with Tampa Bay last season, Godwin accumulated 83 catches for 1,024 yards and two touchdowns. He just turned 28-years-old this past February, and he's finished with at least 1,000 receiving yards in four of the last five seasons.

Godwin would be an immediate upgrade over any other wide receiver the Patriots currently have on their roster, and he would help make Maye's transition into the NFL much easier.

He certainly made life a whole lot easier for former New England star quarterback Tom Brady when the two were teammates in Tampa Bay for three seasons from 2020 to 2022. During their 46 games together (including the playoffs), Brady and Godwin connected on 293 passes for 3,283 yards and 16 touchdowns.

So if the Bucs are interested in potentially trading the veteran receiver elsewhere this offseason, and if their asking price isn't too high, the Patriots should probably listen to Perry's suggestion and consider making a deal for Brady's former teammate.
